The fallout study that catalogued babies' bones around the world
Project Sunshine's 1955 bulletin organizes human-bone samples by age and geography, including stillborns and babies; the tables alone cannot establish how consent was handled for every specimen.
The people behind a laboratory table
Project Sunshine's December 1955 Chicago bulletin begins its human-bone results with stillborn children and babies under 30 days old. The entries turn a personal catastrophe into a laboratory row: age, place, date, sample information and a radioactivity measurement. Their restrained presentation is what makes the record difficult to read.
This is a bulletin of measurements, not a narrative of how families encountered the research programme. Its immediate purpose was to assemble strontium-90 results. The people whose remains supplied those measurements appear largely through categories. The distance between those two perspectives—scientific specimen and human life—is central to understanding the document.
A worldwide measurement problem
The contents organize human material by age and geography, alongside animal, food, soil, water and air samples. The opening explanation defines the reporting units and distinguishes subcontracted analyses. An interlaboratory section compares measurements made by different institutions.
Those checks matter. Collecting samples in many places does not make the numbers comparable automatically. A change in preparation, calcium measurement or counting could look like a difference in exposure. The bulletin's attention to disagreement between laboratories shows the work required before scattered specimens could become a coherent account of fallout.
What the sample date actually means
The human-bone section states that sample dates correspond to death or post-mortem examination. Its first Chicago entries identify suppliers and list stillbirths and premature infants. The table therefore supports specific statements about what kinds of material were analyzed.
A date in such a table should not be silently described as the day consent was obtained, the day a specimen was collected in the field, or the day a laboratory completed its analysis. Those are different events. Likewise, a place heading identifies the record's grouping; it should not be expanded into a claim about an entire population's exposure without examining the sampling method.
The unit is part of the argument
The introduction expresses biological results in relation to calcium, using a unit defined for the programme. That choice lets the reader see that the table is not simply a list of identical pieces of bone measured in an identical way. Sample composition and preparation matter to comparison. The laboratory-check pages acknowledge discrepancies and discuss measurement problems, rather than presenting every number as equally certain. Before comparing two rows, a reader should inspect their units, qualifications and reporting limits. A small printed number without that context can appear more precise than the underlying evidence permits. This is also why the bulletin cannot become a direct ranking of individual harm merely by sorting its measurements.
The question the bulletin cannot answer
The tables do not establish how consent was handled for every specimen. They also do not provide a complete account of each child's life, the family's knowledge or the decisions of every institution supplying material. A serious consent history requires correspondence, hospital records and other evidence beyond the measurements.
That limitation should preserve the question rather than erase it. A technical record can demonstrate that a collection existed while leaving its human arrangements unexplained. Read the introduction and comparison tables before the specimen list: the sequence makes clear what investigators were trying to measure, how they evaluated the numbers, and which questions their reporting system was never designed to answer.
