Facebook changed 689,003 people's feeds for an emotion experiment

Changing the emotional content of feeds produced small shifts in users' own language; the linked paper includes the journal's concern about consent and the ability to opt out.

An experiment inside an everyday feed

For one week in January 2012, Facebook altered what some users saw in their News Feeds. The published study involved 689,003 people and reduced either positive or negative emotional content. Researchers then measured the emotional language in users' own posts. The intervention was quiet; the public argument over it was not.

The crucial distinction is between changing a feed and reading a mind. The study measured words classified by software. Those words were evidence about expression on the platform, not a direct clinical measurement of each user's internal emotional state.

Small changes can be detected precisely

The paper reported small shifts in the expected direction: less positive material was followed by less positive wording, and less negative material by less negative wording. Control groups had content omitted without the same emotional selection. The design sought to isolate the effect of emotional filtering from simply seeing fewer posts.

A large sample can make a tiny average difference detectable. Statistical confidence and practical magnitude answer different questions. A finding can be unlikely to result from sampling noise while remaining small for an individual. Conversely, a small average does not tell us that every participant experienced the same small effect.

Language is an informative, imperfect proxy

A word-count measure makes comparison possible across enormous numbers of posts. It also forces an operational definition: an emotional expression is whatever the chosen classification system counts. That is a useful measurement decision, but it is not the same thing as an exhaustive account of human emotion.

To assess a claim of influence, ask what changed, for whom, and over what interval. Changes in wording do not by themselves establish a lasting change in well-being. They also do not tell us how a different feed, a different population or a later version of the platform would behave.

The experiment changed visibility

The paper says omitted posts remained available through a friend's own page and that direct messages were not altered. This was therefore a change in what appeared in a particular feed view, rather than the deletion of everything emotionally positive or negative from a person's social world. That detail makes the causal claim more precise. The intervention operated through selection and visibility: a platform could influence the mix of material encountered without writing the material itself. It also shows why an account of the experiment must name the product surface involved. A News Feed treatment is not automatically a treatment of every interaction a person had online during that week.

Consent belongs in the result's history

PNAS subsequently published an editorial expression of concern about informed consent and the ability to opt out. The linked copy places that notice before the article. It is part of the reading, not an optional footnote to discard.

Two judgments must be kept separate: whether an experimental comparison supports a finding, and whether people were adequately informed about their participation. A technically interesting result cannot answer the second question for them. Read the paper's methods together with the journal's notice. The combination shows both the power of routine platform decisions to become experiments and the difficulty of treating an ordinary agreement to use a service as a clear understanding of a particular study.
